Taiwan’s unemployment rate increased unexpectedly in June, though marginally, figures from the Directorate General of Budget and Statistics, or DGBAS, showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.76 percent in June from 3.75 percent in May, the same rate as in the previous two months.

Economists had expected the jobless rate to remain steady at 3.75. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was 3.97 percent.

The number of unemployed people climbed to 437,000 in June from 436,000 in the previous month. In the same month of the prior year, the jobless figure totaled 457,000.

On an unadjusted basis, the unemployment rate also increased to 3.71 percent in June from 3.62 percent in the preceding month.

The labour force participation rate came in at a seasonally adjusted 58.64 percent in June, down from 58.65 percent in May.
