Turkey’s unemployment rate increased unexpectedly in June, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute showed Tuesday.
The unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 9.6 percent in June from 9.3 percent in the previous month. Economists had forecast the rate to fall marginally to 9.2 percent.In the corresponding month last year, the jobless rate was 9.1 percent.
The number of unemployed people increased to 2.88 million in June from 2.78 million in the preceding month. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 2.65 million.
The youth unemployment rate, which applies to the 15 to 24 age group, climbed to 17.7 percent in June from 17.0 percent in May.
The seasonally adjusted jobless rate came in at 10.4 percent in June, up slightly from 10.2 percent a month ago.
