The leading economic index in the UK, which measures the future economic activity, decreased in May, the results of a survey by the Conference Board showed Thursday.

The Conference Board leading economic index fell 0.4 percent in May, following a 0.3 percent climb in April.

Out of the seven components, only three contributed positively to the index in May.

In the six-month period to May, the leading economic index increased 0.9 percent, an improvement from the decline of 0.1 percent over the previous six months.

Meanwhile, the coincident index that reflects the current economic activity rose 0.1 percent in May, after a 0.2 percent increase in the prior month. All four components gained during the month.

Taken together, the current behavior of the composite indexes suggests that the economy is likely to continue to expanding in the near term, the Conference Board said.
