Like-for-like sales in the United Kingdom were flat on year in May, the British Retail Consortium said on Tuesday.
That missed forecasts for an increase of 1.2 percent on year following the 2.4 percent contraction in April.
Over the last three months, like-for-like sales have added 0.5 percent – including a 2.1 percent increase in non-food items and a 1.4 percent fall in food items.
“May witnessed a slowdown in sales growth, below the three-month and 12-month average,” said Helen Dickinson, director-general of the BRC. “This was mainly due to fashion sales, which experienced a decline compared with the same month last year, where we saw record demand.”
