Just as the automakers in the United States were trying to come out of the record recall of vehicles in 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU) is set to recall its pickup trucks. Pressured by the regulators in the United States, the company would be recalling approximately 843,000 pickup trucks. The issue was slamming the door too hard, and that might set off the airbag meant to offer head protection in case of a crash from the side.
Different Models
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU) recall of vehicles included 667,000 in the United States covering the Ram, 1500, 2500, and 3500. These vehicles were made between 2013 and 2015 models. In Canada and Mexico also, the automaker is recalling 153,000 and 8,300 vehicles respectively. That apart, 15,000 vehicles outside the North America will also be recalled, according to reports quoting its spokesperson.
The company told the problem in June to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the automaker maintained that there was no need for a recall of the vehicles but indicated its readiness to notify owners that a solution to the problem was available. However, the regulator was not satisfied with the contention of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU) and wanted a recall. That meant that the company needed to fix every vehicle and also submit the progress report.
Under Scrutiny
The automaker seemed to have come under the scrutiny of the regulator due to its hesitancy in carrying out the recalls. The regulator held a hearing this month where the company was blamed for failing to recall dangerous vehicles promptly. The safety agency cited 23 recalls representing eleven million cars. There is also a possibility of a fine being slapped.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU) is probably the first firm to come under more scrutiny after Mark Rosekind took over the safety agency reins in December last. The agency has been accused of being lax on automakers. The current move is considered as a signal to the hard line thinking of the regulator.
