Consumer confidence in Australia was down in March, the latest survey from Westpac Bank and the Melbourne Institute revealed on Wednesday.

The index dropped 2.2 percent to a score of 99.1 – slipping below the 100-point level that separates optimism from pessimism.

The index had jumped 4.2 percent in February to a score of 101.3.

“The index is back to around its average reading over the last six months,” Westpac said in a statement accompanying the data.
