Belgium business confidence deteriorated sharply at the start of the year, partly erasing the solid gain in the previous month, survey data from the National Bank of Belgium showed Monday.

The business confidence indicator fell to -3 from -1.4 in December. Economists had forecast a modest weakening to -1.8 in January.

Confidence deteriorated in manufacturing, business services, and trade sectors. In contrast, morale continued to improve in the building industry with the indicator entering positive territory.
