Box Office: Disney’s Zootopia Takes $232.5-M Worldwide

The Disney Animation (NYSE:DIS) title took $232.5-M worldwide.

New offerings London Has Fallen’ lags, Tina Fey’s ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ and Terrence Malick’s ‘Knight of Cups’ struggle.

At the weekend, Zootopia, driven by glowing reviews and an A CinemaScore, scored a record $73.7-M from 3,827 theaters in North America, the top showing ever for Disney Animation Studios and the #1 March debut for an animated title, and the # 4 March opening for any film, behind The Hunger Games ($152.5-M) and 2 Disney live-action titles, Alice in Wonderland ($116.1-M) and Oz The Great and Powerful ($79.1-M).

Disney Animation’s previous biggest opening belonged to the 2013 blockbuster Frozen ($67.4-M).

Zootopia is  a hit overseas, where it began rolling out 3 weeks ago. The family film took in another $63.4-M this weekend, including $24-M in China, the biggest opening ever for a Disney Animation or Pixar release, putting its foreign total at $158.8-M and worldwide box office take at $232.5. Imax (NYSE:IMAX) theaters, not exactly known for family films, turned in an impressive $8.5-M globally.

The reinvention of Disney Animation Studios began when Disney bought Pixar and put Pixar’s John Lasseter and Ed Catmull in charge of all animation efforts.

 

Disney does not reveal budgets for its animated films but Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6 cost roughly $165 million to make.

Deadpool pasted the $300-M mark in North America, earning $16.3-M from 3,624 theaters in its 4th weekend for a domestic box office total of $311.2-M through Sunday. Overseas, its weekend take was $21.2-M for a foreign take of $362-M and worldwide box office of $673.2-M.

London Has Fallen placed # 2 in North America with $21.7-M from 3,490 theaters, it came in behind expectations audiences liked it giving it an A- CinemaScore.

Gods of Egypt tumbled 64% to $5-M in its 2nd frame for a domestic total of $22.8-M, coming in #5. Overseas the film grossed $15.7-M for a foreign take of $49.6-M and a global box office of $72.4-M.

Tina Fey’s war dramedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot also came in behind expectations, opening to an estimated $7.6-M from 2,374 theaters.

Whiskey Tango, earning decent reviews and a B CinemaScore, skewed female (56%) and notably older, with nearly 90% of ticket buyers over the age of 25.

At the specialty box office

Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups opened in 4 theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the movie grossed $56,668 for a location average of $14,172 for Broad Green Pictures. Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Wes Bentley star.
