Scotland’s first minister and leader of Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon has been making her moves towards a fresh new referendum in Scotland that ties the country to the European Union. Though vocally she said over and over that she will seek another fresh independence from UK referendum if she feels that national sentiment has changed but as of now, she is more interested in uniting with the EU than to break away with the UK.
Angus Robertson, leader of her SNP’s Westminster group said: “We voted to remain because we are a European nation and it really, really matters to us that we live in an outward-looking country, not a diminished little Britain”. Scotland voted 62 percent in favor of remaining in the European Union, more than any place in the whole United Kingdom, except for London.
Ms. Sturgeon is to submit a motion for debate that will strengthen her negotiating power. This motion assures the EU citizens that they are welcome in the Scotland and provides a mandate to the government to hold talks with both the UK and European authorities.
As of now, she is moving swiftly to secure Scotland’s position in the European Union in future and this time, SNP is ready to go as far as required to achieve it, just like Mr. Roberson said: “We are a European country and we will stay a European country. If that means we have to have an independence referendum to protect Scotland’s place, then so be it.”
