While details are still sparse, Bloomberg reports that a gunman opened fire on Wednesday evening at the Sarona shopping center, a bustling area in central Tel Aviv full of cafes, pubs and restaurants, injuring at least nine people before being shot himself, police confirmed. One of the victims was in a critical condition, two others were seriously injured while six others had wounds with varying degrees of severity, Police Spokeswoman Luba Samri said.

She said the shooting appeared to be a terrorist attack.

The shooting occurred in the Sarona compound in the heart of the city, immediately next to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa Tel Aviv office. Witnesses said the gunman was overpowered when he ran out of ammunition.

Israel and the Palestinian areas have suffered a wave of violence since October, including dozens of knife attacks launched by Palestinians protesting the ongoing occupation and perceived Israeli violations – denied by Israel – at a disputed Jerusalem holy site.

The violence however had appeared to have calmed down in the last weeks.

According to Israeli media, one suspected terrorist was shot near the scene and another other was apprehended alive. Footage from the scene showed an armed civilian firing shots at one of the suspected perpetrators.

According to unconfirmed reports by police sources, two assailants had dressed up as ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Paramedics were treating nine wounded people, of them one was in life-threatening condition, two were in serious condition and six were being treated in various conditions. At least seven wounded people were evacuated to the nearby Ichilov Medical Center.

The incident now appears to be over because as the following clips show, the assailant was promptly gunned down after the attack.
