Japan’s consumer confidence improved more-than-expected in August after falling in the previous month, survey data from the Cabinet Office showed Wednesday.

The consumer confidence index rose by 1.4 points to 41.7 in August from 40.3 in July. Economists had expected the index to increase slightly to 40.5.

The survey was conducted on August 15th covering 8,400 households. The response rate was 65.7 percent.

The overall livelihood index strengthened to 40.1 in August from 38.1 in the preceding month. The willingness to buy durable goods index came in at 40.3 in August, up from 38.8 in July.

The index measuring employment levels improved by 1.6 points to 46.3 in August. Similarly, income growth index rose to 39.9 from 39.6.
