Japan’s consumer confidence improved for the fourth straight month in March, surpassing expectations, survey data from the Cabinet Office showed Friday.

The consumer confidence index rose to 41.7 in March from 40.9 in the previous month. Economists had expected the index to increase to 41.3. The latest reading was the highest since December 2013, when it marked the same 41.7.

The survey was conducted on March 15th covering 5,712 households. The response rate was 66.6 percent.

The overall livelihood index climbed by 0.4 points to 38.8 in March from the preceding month. The willingness to buy durable goods index came in at 40.6 in March, up from 39.8 in February.

The index measuring employment levels improved by 1.3 points to 47.8 in March. Similarly, income growth index rose to 39.4 from 38.8.
