John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands Championed The American Indie Film Movement

“When we ran out of money, we paid for our own pictures by acting for others or mortgaging our home,” recalls Gena Rolands, who will be honored at the Governors Awards on 14 November for her lifetime of work in the movie industry.

Gena Rowlands, 85 anni, and her late husband, director John Cassavetes, championed and led the American indie film movement with such films as 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence and 1980’s Gloria.

At the Governors Awards, the actress will receive an honorary Oscar for her lifetime of work in film.

The Big Q: What was the indie scene like before you and your husband started making movies?

The Big A: There wasn’t anybody doing it. Everything was done through the studios. But we did it on our own. When we ran out of money, we paid for our own pictures by acting for others or mortgaging our home. It was a struggle, but it was a wonderful struggle.

John Cassavetes loved actors, and he had a particular interest in women in movies. He was interested in women’s problems and where they are in society and what they have to overcome. He offered me some really wonderful parts, Ms. Rowlands said.

When asked by a reporter, “If Steven Spielberg asked you to act in his next film, what would you say?”

I would say, “Well, I’m retired … but I will read the script!”

Have some fun, see a movie this weekend.
