New Zealand’s net migration set a record gain in 2015, with fewer people leaving for Australia and more arrivals from across Asia, figures from Statistics New Zealand showed Monday.
In the year to December 31, the country recorded a net migration of 64,900. It resulted from a record high of 121,900 migrant arrivals and 57,000 migrant departures.
Moreover, New Zealand’s annual net gain of migrants has set records for the last 17 months.
At the same time, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 5,500 migrants in December, down from the record high of 6,200 in November.
Visitor arrivals to New Zealand numbered 444,900 in December, which was the highest ever monthly increase. The biggest increase was in visitors from China, up 11,000, or 43 percent from December 2014.
Overseas trips made by New Zealand residents grew 6.0 percent to 2.45 million in December. Australia and the United States were the main destinations for travelers.
