Poland retail sales logged a surprise decline in August, figures from the statistical office indicated Thursday.

Retail sales at current prices dropped 0.3 percent year-on-year, defying economists’ expectations for a 1.5 percent gain. Month-on-month, sales fell 2.6 percent.

At constant prices, retail sales grew 2 percent annually following 3.5 percent increase in the previous month. On a monthly basis, sales declined 1.8 percent.
