Spain’s merchandise export value reached a record high for the month of February, figures from the Economy Ministry showed Monday.

Exports climbed 2.8 percent year-over-year to EUR 19.9 billion in February, which was the highest value since the beginning of the time series began in 1971.

In February, shipments to the EU states grew 5.1 percent annually in March, while exports to non-EU countries fell by 1.5 percent.

Imports also advanced in February. It rose 4.5 percent from the previous year to EUR 21.9 billion

At the same time, the visible trade deficit for the country widened to EU 2.0 billion in February from EUR 1.6 billion in the same month last year, as imports rose faster than exports.

In the January to February period, total trade deficit totaled EUR 4.6 billion versus EUR 4.4 billion in the corresponding period a year ago. Exports remained flat and imports increased by 0.4 percent.
