Like-for-like sales in the United Kingdom fell 0.2 percent on year in October, the British Retail Consortium said on Tuesday.

That was well shy of forecasts for an increase of 0.8 percent and down from 2.6 percent in September.

Overall sales were up 0.9 percent – beneath the three-month average of 1.8 percent and the one-year average of 1.9 percent.

Food sales were up 0.5 percent over the last three months, while non-food sales advanced 2.9 percent.

“A number of categories which we’d typically expect to be popular on Black Friday saw a slowdown in October, suggesting that some shoppers may be holding out in the hope of some great deals at the end of November,” said Helen Dickinson, chief executive, British Retail Consortium.
